Every HBO Comedy Ranked From Worst To Best
28. A Black Lady Sketch Show
For fans of literal titles, this is the show for you; for fans of high quality sketch comedy from performers often underrepresented in the industry, A Black Lady Sketch Show is also a safe bet. Devised by Robin Thede and written by an evolving cast of great talent, this is one of the finest sketch comedies on TV today, providing something totally different.
The two seasons released thus far have produced hilarious and surprising skits on all manner of subjects, taking on segregated baseball of the 1930s, Motown, modern life and dating, TV spoofs, and more. It’s a timely show in many ways - alongside racial commentary, the pandemic-delayed second season allowed them to take on COVID before most TV shows had the chance.
The show is stuffed with appearances from pop cultural legends like Angella Bassett and Patti LeBelle, all of whom are more than game.
Like any sketch show, not everything hits the mark, and between the more incendiary material the Ladies hit on some pretty rote stuff, but when the show hits, its unique perspective and quality writing tips it over the edge.
