13. The Corner (2000)
David Simon strikes again, this time offering audiences a sharp and eye-opening slice-of-life drama about a drug addict whose personal woes seem to represent the issues with his once-thriving neighbourhood.
The Corner is much like I Know This Much Is True, in that it is a dire, gritty and uncompromisingly depressing affair, but watching it it's impossible not to realise that that's the point. The show is grounded in a harsh reality, and tackles that reality head-on with little hesitation. Like all great HBO shows, it asks the big questions, forces you to consider them, and presents a compelling answer that will stay with you long after the last episode has finished rolling.
