Every Inside No. 9 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

7. La Couchette

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: A group of people on a French sleeper train have an incredibly difficult and sleepless night, mainly thanks to the fact that one of the passengers in the compartment is dead.

Location: A train sleeping compartment.

If there's one word to sum this episode up, it would be... hysterical.

La Couchette's script is a superb, brilliantly-written farce in which pretty much every single joke lands and, chances are, you'll be laughing so hard you'll have to pause the episode and catch your breath.

It's also superbly performed. Shearsmith and Pemberton (who spends most of the episode speaking German) are their usual hilarious selves, and the episode features hilarious supporting turns from Julie Hesmondhalgh, Mark Benton and Jessica Gunning; hell, even Jack Whitehall isn't annoying in it.

Yes, it's not as deep or dark as other episodes of the show, but if you want joyous, laugh-out-loud hilarity then you really can't do much better than La Couchette. Besides, it's got a terrific plot twist and plenty of darkness in the bargain, so it's not all laughs and no depth.

All in all, a side-splitting gem and arguably the funniest Inside No, 9 episode to date.
