11. Cloak & Dagger: Season 1

Cloak and Dagger TV
ABC

The latest addition to Marvel’s small screen universe, Freeform took on the relatively obscure duo of Cloak & Dagger for an individual spin on the Marvel hero formula.

Centred around two lost and broken teens that share a random (and super-powered) connection; the two leads are remarkably played by Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph. Both hold mature talent as actors but also strongly play believable teens as well. Their arcs are immediately engaging and involving due to the strength of the performers alone.

The writing takes on a refreshingly unconventional manner for this type of set-up, more focused on being a mystery drama with several inventive surreal set-pieces sprinkled in. As the heroes come into their own near the end, things become more conventional yet the journey is unpredictable enough to engage.

If there’s really a sour point, it's that the production values and visual style are painfully flat and average. It sadly hampers the incredibly inventive writing and makes some of the more Lynchian visions come across as awkward instead of enthralling. If Cloak & Dagger could have the same panache as something like FX’s Legion, it would be placed much higher.
