12. Jessica Jones: Season 2

Jessica Jones Kilgrave
Netflix

With some of the recent Netflix/Marvel shows stumbling, all eyes were on the championed Jessica Jones to bring the quality back. It does so on its own terms naturally - yet to mixed results.

The earlier segments are hard to embrace with Jones a sulky mess, even with the ever likeable Kristen Ritter doing her best to gain audience sympathy. She's let-down by an arduous pacing that pushes us to our patience threshold.

Luckily, things pick up significantly with the introduction of Janet McTeer’s super-powered mystery figure; it’s a layered and fascinating character who shares incredible chemistry with Ritter. Their complex relationship creates a unique story that's more rich character study then Avengers smash-up and manages to build some genuinely profound and moving moments.

Outside of the main duo, the supporting cast is seriously weak with many of them conflict-prone irritants. This is no more clear than with Rachael Taylor’s sub-plot that teeters on being outright obnoxious this time around.

Despite its flaws (and there a few), it's admirable how the showrunners didn't break under the massive success of the first season and kept the low-key and unique approach. It boils down to a super-powered family drama that examines parental relationships and vulnerable psychology in fresh ways despite its setbacks.
