Every Season Of American Horror Story - Ranked
4. Coven
Coven: one of the most aesthetically pleasing seasons of
American Horror Story.
Fans resonated with this season for a couple of reasons, and one of those was the solid-gold style of the witches. It cemented AHS as a show that is not only horrific, but beautiful.
But on a deeper level, it also tapped into the growing interest surrounding neo-pagan religions. Many viewers were able to identify with witchcraft being represented on the screen. And for those non-Wiccans, there’s a certain morbid fascination for witchcraft and trials/hunts/executions that’s shared across the board.
Coven focused on a group of young women who were starting their journey as part of a coven. There is a strong feminist theme throughout the season, especially on the subject of underestimating women. However, there is also an incredibly interesting exploration of race.
In one of the most complex roles she’s ever been utilised in, we see Kathy Bates as a sadistic torturous racist that enters into a friendship with young black witch, Queenie. In a dynamic that can only be described as complicated, scenes with those two had everyone sat on the edge of their seats.
Queenie and her coven members navigate the world of witchcraft with mentors Cordelia Foxx (Sarah Paulson), Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy), and Stevie Nicks.
Yes, from Fleetwood Mac.
It’s just as great as it sounds.
