Falcon And Winter Soldier - Everything You Need To Know About Zemo

8. He's Heavily Disfigured

Baron Zemo Captain America
Marvel Comics

When Heinrich Zemo perished, his son, Helmut, vowed to destroy Captain America since he blamed the star-spangled superhero for his father's demise. (Heinrich actually killed himself after he caused a boulder to fall on his head, but his son tends to ignore this minute detail.)

Taking on the persona as The Phoenix (no connection to Jean Grey), the new Zemo planned to drown Cap in the same adhesive that scarred his father many years ago. While battling Steve Rogers, the supervillain clumsily fell into the adhesive vat, which scarred his face permanently.

Because of the properties of the chemical, Zemo's wounds couldn't be conventionally healed, forcing him to cover his mutilated face with his iconic purple hood.

Every time he looks in the mirror, he is constantly reminded of his defeat by Captain America and his failure to avenge his father. This has caused Zemo's hatred for the Avengers' leader to evolve from a dutiful mission to a life-consuming obsession.

Although he wants to rule the world so the Nazi regime can return to power, his greatest desire is to kill Captain America.
