3. The Truth About Calvin
The next scene is Nick meeting with Calvin in a diner, and we immediately realize that this isn't an innocent former friend who has lost contact with Nick. In actuality, the charming and soft-spoken Cal is Nick's dealer, and it was he who Nick had been frantically trying to reach in search of some explanation for what he witnessed back at the church. Calvin informs him that his mother came to his house looking for him and that he can't have that, while accusing Nick of talking too much. The addict assures him that he hasn't said a word to anyone and pleads with Calvin to tell him what substance he gave to Gloria that caused her to kill and turn into a monster. After reacting defensively, he lightens up and offers Nick his next high. When we see them moments later it's obvious that Nick is doped up again, as he's no longer erratic and jumpy. Calvin drives them out to a secluded spot and attempts to kill Nick, but he resists and the gun goes off, killing Calvin instead. Nick panics and flees the scene. He calls Travis for help, who arrives with Nick's mother in tow and the young man breaks down and confesses to what happened.
