Probably the biggest change in the entire series was Daenerys being re-cast at the same time as Ehle/Fairley and the Catelyn Stark switch. Tamzin Merchant starred in the main role during the original Pilot, but was obviously deemed unsuitable for the role. Emilia Clarke was brought in, and whatever you make of her acting, she's become a hugely recognisable figure around the world, and while she obviously has her critics, the decision to swap Merchant for Clarke has clearly paid dividends.
