Game Of Thrones: 10 Darkest Moments The Show Left Out

4. The Death Of Vargo Hoat

Game of Thrones Bran Stark
HBO

In season three, we meet the character Locke. He's the guy recruited by Roose Bolton to hunt down and capture Jaime Lannister, before lopping off his hand. The character's book equivalent is a far more interesting figure. His name is Vargo Hoat, although he's sometimes referred to as 'The Goat'.

Hoat is a cruel and sadistic leader of a band of sellswords, who at first fight for the Lannisters, but then switch sides. His followers earn themselves the nickname 'The Footman' as they're known for chopping off the feet of those they capture. Pretty much everyone loathes these guys for the cruelty they inflict throughout the war.

Anyway, after switching sides one too many times, Hoat finds himself with very few options. He becomes ill from an infected wound, and all his men abandon him in Harrenhal. Eventually he finds himself at the mercy of the Mountain when the fortress is recaptured by the Lannisters.

The Mountain subjects Hoat to one of the slowest and cruelest deaths in the book. He essentially dissects the man over a period of time, letting him heal in between each mutilation, to drag out his torment. The pieces of Hoat's body are roasted and fed to him. When several Northern prisoners are given some suspicious looking meat, they're told it's "roasted goat".
