Game Of Thrones: 10 Darkest Moments The Show Left Out

2. Brienne's Facial Mutilation

Game of Thrones Bran Stark
HBO

Season four of Game of Thrones signed off with the brutal showdown between the Hound and Brienne. It was one of those moments that pitted two much loved characters against each. Brienne had become a fan favourite by this point, and the Hound was slowly showing signs that he might be capable of redemption.

Luckily for book readers, they never had to choose between the two characters. Brienne's showdown with the Hound turns out to be with Rorge - a perpetrator of the Saltpans massacre - who was merely wearing the Hound's helmet.

Brienne manages to slay the murderous rogue, but is set upon by his companion Biter. Brienne is unable to overpower her attacker; she's knocked to the ground, and helplessly struggles as Biter begins tearing huge chunks of her face away with his teeth. The description Martin gives of the ordeal is horrific. Brienne is struck by the stench of the man's breath, before having the horrific realisation that Biter is swallowing mouthfuls of her flesh after every bite.

She eventually passes out and is saved by the Brotherhood without Banners. When she comes around, she learns her face has been horrendously mutilated.
