Melisandre's position at number five on this list just goes to show how many detestable characters have appeared on the show. She's not only an awful person, she spends her time spouting beliefs that feel antiquated and silly even in a world that embraces magic and Dragons. In the apparently non-contradictory position as priestess, advisor and adulterous lover of Stannis Baratheon, she seems to carry out atrocities wherever she goes. One of the more memorable of course was her giving birth to a demon shadow baby that killed poor, sweet Renly Baratheon. Out of all the characters in the show, she is perhaps the one with the murkiest motivations; it's difficult to believe she really wants to help Stannis, no matter what she stands to gain. So what's her role in all this exactly? It's possible that she is merely invested in evil for sport, but you get the feeling that she has her eye on something grander. Hopefully she'll reach a messy end quite soon, but then again, she's clearly one of the most powerful characters in the entire show.
