As well as filling in the gaps to some of the events and backstories of the series, a prequel movie could also serve to lay down some groundwork for what we see play out in the future. Obviously the most pressing concern would be telling its own story, but having some great little teases that tie back to what we've already watched, or can pick up on during a re-watch, would be great.

It could lay major clues to R+L=J, for example, or just outright confirm it. Going into Thrones right from the beginning with that knowledge would change how you view Jon quite a lot, and all the subtle teases would be more appreciated.

Or how about Howland Reed - is he really the key to everything as many think he is? We could finally see him on-screen, and leave with some tantalisingly clues as to what exactly he knows. There's a lot of groundwork the movie could lay that would make the appreciation of both it and the series far greater.
