7. Mastodon Cameo
There's something of a penchant for casting famous musicians in cameo roles in the show. Legend Wilko Johnson of course played Ser Illyn Payne before cancer cut his role short and back in season 3, Coldplay drummer Will Champion is one of the musicians who plays The Rains of Castamere during the Red Wedding. He was thus in on the whole thing, if you needed another reason not to like Coldplay.
The following season for the Purple Wedding, Sigur Ros were the band behind the same song, before King Joffrey took exception to them and pelted them with coins. Then there's Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, who appeared in season as a troop singng "The Bear And The Maiden Fair". Two other bands have appeared in performance only: both The National and The Hold Steady have performed Westerosi songs over the credits of episodes.
This season's musical cameo fell to hairy metallers Mastodon who played Wildings in "Hardhome."
