4. He Was Saved By R'hllor
R'hllor is The Red God, the one that Melisandre and the Brothers Without Banners worship, and it is known (Ha! It is known) that R'hllor saved Hodor from a terrible stable accident when he was just a boy because he knew the important role he would play for Bran Stark in his quest to find the three-eyed raven - well that's the speculation anyway.
You see, theorists believe that "Hodor" is supposed to be simple-minded Walder's way of pronouncing "R'hllor" when he tries to pronounce his saviour's name. Perhaps he's not sure what he's trying to say, but he knows it's something along those lines.
In this theory, Hodor is the only one that can help Bran on his quest to ultimately defeat the White Walkers, and so the Lord of Light spared him on that fateful night in the stables.
