Game Of Thrones: Every Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
54. Sons Of The Harpy (S5E4)
Written By: Dave Hill Directed By: Mark Mylod
The titular Sons and the Faith Militant both gain a footing in this episode, in Meereen and King's Landing respectively, making this a high watermark for fans of murderous fanatics.
The episode gave us the death of Barristan Selmy (sort of, as he wasn't shown as dead until the next episode), which felt like a waste of the character and more like it was used for shock value, although the Sons attack does at least provide an initial thrill.
More importantly in the long-run, Melisandre takes an interest in Jon Snow, Barristan mentions how beloved Rhaegar Targaryen was, and Littlefinger and Sansa have a conversation about her aunt Lyanna, complete with a sense of knowing more than he's letting on from Baelish. What could it all mean?!
53. Valar Dohaeris (S3E1)
Written By: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Directed By: Daniel Minahan
Although this is the episode that kicks off the best two-season run the show has delivered, there's not much here that suggests truly great beginnings, but rather standard opening episode fare.
Barristan Selmy reveals himself as Daenerys' saviour, and she ends her stay in Qarth and begins the journey over to Slaver's Bay. Oh, the promise it held. Valar Dohaeris also gives us our first look at a giant, which is impressive and memorable, but the rest of the episode is table-dressing, and still picking up the many pieces of the Battle of the Blackwater.
