Game Of Thrones: Every Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

42. Oathbreaker (S6E3)

Game of Thrones Tower of Joy Young Ned
HBO

Written By: David Benioff & D.B. Weiss Directed By: Daniel Sackheim

Jon Snow is back from the dead, and he's taking care of business: hanging the Night's Watch mutineers, and then ending his watch altogether, handing the cloak over to a surprised Dolorous Edd.

Daenerys heads to Vaes Dothrak, Arya is beaten around by the Waif but gets her sight back, and Sam's stuck on a boat being seasick, in what's a rather middling early season episode, elevated (and then let down again) by finally showing the Tower of Joy (or part of it, because it's still only episode 3). Although it comes to a very frustrating end, we do get to see the fight between Ned Stark and Arthur Dayne, which is every bit as exciting as you'd hope (with a surprise thrown in there too) and one of the best swordfights the show has delivered.

41. What Is Dead May Never Die (S2E3)

Game of Thrones Theon
HBO

Written By: Bryan Cogman Directed By: Alik Sakharov

The highlight of this episode, which is one of the better third episodes, is some absolutely top-level Hand of the King work from Tyrion, who manages to outwit Varys, Littlefinger, and Pycelle, playing each of them in order to discover which one is the traitor.

It also introduces us to two of the show's strongest female characters, with both Brienne of Tarth and Margaery Tyrell making their series debuts here, the former an unhappy but fierce warrior, the other an underestimated player of the game. Alas, poor Yoren dies in this episode, but not before he's given the idea of a kill list to Arya.
