Game Of Thrones Season 7: 10 Ups And 2 Downs From 'Stormborn'
6. Sam Attempts To Save Jorah
Jorah was briefly introduced at the Citadel last week, providing an effective jump scare, but it was contained to just seeing his arm and hearing Iain Glen's gruff voice.
He makes his return proper this week, and it isn't easy viewing for any fans of his. The greyscale has started to wrack his entire upper body, and it's tragic to witness just how fast it has spread, and how little time he has left (six months before losing his mind).
While Archmaester Ebrose (Jim Broadbent, once more proving himself a perfect fit for this world, and in particular this peculiar little corner of it) has given up on him, Sam hasn't. It's nice that it makes the connection between Jorah and Jeor Mormont, giving Sam a deeper reason to do this, besides him wanting to prove himself as a potential Maester.
The scene itself is gruesome (that's twice in two weeks the Citadel has given us the episode's gross-out moment), and - as my colleague Simon felt necessary to point out - why would you start with the nipple? That's just cruel.
It's interesting to watch it unfold though, and leaves us curious as to whether or not it'll actually work. I do think Jorah will be saved, so he can die a more noble death, and while it won't be easy, at least we get some hope here. Also, points for that transition between Sam cutting into Jorah's chest, and the man cutting into his pie. Thrones' editing team are having a great year thus far.
