Game Of Thrones Season 7: 9 Hints From "Eastwatch" Trailer

6. Varys Hatches A Plan

Varys is very much team Tyrion when it comes to how Dany should be leading. Just like the Imp, he knows that her roasting people alive isn't good for the publicity campaign, and he knows that it's the opinion of the people that really matters to Dany in the long-term.

She could storm King's Landing immediately and kill everyone of Cersei's remaining allies in one fell swoop, but she would always be remembered as the wild foreign invader who unseated a democratic leader who basically looks after her people mostly. In contrast to Dany's volatile image, Cersei wins with the people on account of her lack of dragon-related policies.

So it seems Varys will seek to get Tyrion to convince her to change her approach. By the look of it, he knows that won't help.

It's interesting here to note that Tyrion has turned back to alcohol - typically his self-destructive coping mechanism (his heaviest drinking coincided with his greatest unhappiness) - suggesting very much that he's struggling.

There's some suggestion that Varys is actually talking about Cersei here - with some artful misdirection - but it would surely take an almighty suspension of disbelief for anyone to think that she would listen to him.

This conversation is still going to be key though, because it plays some part in Tyrion heading back to King's Landing (where he goes with Davos according to set leaks), where he meets the episode's big returning character.
