Game Of Thrones: 10 Things We Learned From "Breaker Of Chains"
5. The Hound Doesnt Mind Robbing Innocents
Arya and The Hound (otherwise known as everyones favourite mismatched duo) are continuing their journey to The Vale, but while stopping to rest, they encounter a man and his daughter and discover that theyre trespassing on his land. Since The Hounds people skills are lacking, Arya apologizes on his behalf and lies about how her father was wounded during the war fighting for House Tully and hasnt been the same. The man offers them shelter for the night, and at dinner, Arya and Sandor express their gratitude by slurping down most of the soup. During the meal, the man comments on how Walder Frey committed sacrilege during the Red Wedding, but Sandor states that guest right doesnt mean anything anymore. The man also comments on how things have gotten worse since the Freys took the Riverlands. Raiders stealing peoples food and silver is a common occurrence, but theres nowhere else to go since the countrys gone sour. The man offers Sandor a job protecting the farm from raiders, and Sandor accepts. Unfortunately for the man and his daughter, Sandor has no interest in defending farmers and takes the job merely so he can steal their silver the next day. Arya is upset by this, but Sandor states that because the man is weak and cant defend his farm, he and his daughter will be dead soon, and the dead dont need silver. What The Hound did may have been wrong, but in his eyes its only pragmatic. Since the Red Wedding (and arguably since the Lannisters took the throne), the rule of law is all but gone in the rural areas of Westeros. Its everyone for themselves, and this unfortunately means that thieves and soldiers abusing their authority are the ones truly in power. Guest right and taking care of others are now things likely to screw you over. Sandor knows this, which is why he has no problem robbing the father. He needs to do whatever it takes to survive and get Arya to The Vale, and hell steal a mans silver if he knows that man will be dead come winter. Its survival of the fittest.
