Gotham Season 5: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'They Did What?'
Ups...
4. The Culmination (& Pay-off) Of All The Central Narratives
As noted earlier, They Did What? is a highly emotional outing, and this comes as no surprise given that it's practically the end of the series as we know it. While we've still one episode to go before having to bid farewell to Gotham forever, this penultimate episode is, in a sense, the real end as all of the show's central narratives reach their natural conclusion.
Gordon's life has been altered forever with the birth of his daughter, meaning that his primary goal will no longer be chasing down the bad guys. In short, his priorities will have somewhat changed. Of course, this will provide an interesting dilemma for him considering that, in a time before Batman, he is the hero Gotham needs.
The greatest thing about Gordon's current arc reaching its end is that we finally see him rewarded for his valour and bravery with the moniker of Commissioner. It's a moment we've been dying to see since the series' very first episode, and the payoff is truly superb. For those of us who stuck with the show during thick and thin, it's a highly rewarding moment.
Additionally, Bruce's groundbreaking decision to leave Gotham in his past also suggests that this chapter of his life has reached its end, and his emotional farewell with Alfred is further proof of this.
Yes, in many ways They Did What? is the true conclusion of Gotham, as both Bruce Wayne's childhood and Gordon's days as a rookie cop are officially at an end. Now, the new era can begin - an era which we'll get a look at next week.
