Right out of the gate, Maya Lopez was one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters Hawkeye could boast. Relatively obscure, particularly in the mainstream, and portrayed by Alaqua Cox who had no previous acting credits to her name, the character already had a spin-off lined up on Disney+ before a single episode of Hawkeye dropped.

What could be so special about this character to have earned such a high expectation from Marvel Studios? Fortunately, fans had an answer almost immediately. Simply put, Maya was a badass.

Fighting against all odds growing up deaf and with a prosthetic leg, she excelled thanks to her attitude and encouragement from her dad, before he was killed by the Ronin. This is what brought her into the path of Kate and Clint, and you can’t blame her for wanting them dead. One of the key aspects about a villain is that they need a good motivation, and Maya’s was so good that she almost shouldn’t be counted as one.

Yes, she tried to kill the protagonists, several times, but who wouldn’t have? With the reveal that she had been manipulated by Fisk and Kazi for years, she was finally able to claim revenge and break free from the organisation, allowing her the platform to evolve into Echo moving forward. The future is very bright in the MCU for Maya Lopez.
