House Of Cards: 10 Questions That Must Be Answered In Season 3
6. Is Claire Underwood Starting To Crack?
The one constant in Seasons 1 and 2 of House of Cards has been the steely, unshakeable resolve of Frank's wife and coconspirator Claire Underwood. Arguably the strongest female lead of any show in recent years, she's been the driving force behind Frank's rise to power, brought clean water to the developed world, helped make the military a safer place for women, and ruthlessly ripped the heart out of anyone who stood in her way. She thought nothing of sacking half her staff to usher in a new era at her company, didn't blink when ruining the life of the man she's loved since her youth, and laid the groundwork for the destruction of a president by sabotaging his family. Finally though, after barely batting an eyelid as those around her fell to pieces, Season 2 ended with her breaking down in tears, albeit only for a few moments. If House of Cards really is Macbeth in suits, then the future for Claire looks grim. In Shakespeare's classic, Lady Macbeth plots, schemes, and keeps her husband on the gory path to power, getting her share of blood on her hands in the process. Finally overcome with the evil of what she's done, her role in the play diminishes and she eventually takes her own life. How she handles the pressures of being First Lady, all while her husband keeps his hands firmly around the throat of power, is one of Season 3's most intriguing story arcs.
