The entire scenario of his proposal to Robin is completely absurd, full of extremely elaborate lies, manipulations, and mind games. He uses many of her friends to get to her in a strange deceitful attempt to win her back.

The worst part about this entire plot point is that it works. Not only does he get everyone to play along with this lie, but he actually ends up getting Robin to say yes and agree to marry him after the countless lies.

He uses one of Robin's least favorite people in the world, faking a relationship with her in order to make her upset, and then eventually using that wave of emotions to his advantage. He admits his feelings to Robin, and when he gets rejected, he decides to use Patrice to make her upset and realize that she feels the same way about him.

In the event that these feelings weren't completely valid, and she was just wanting something that she couldn't have, putting her in this tough situation is extremely evil. In an emotional state like that, I am sure that anyone would have said yes to him, making his plan not specific to the woman he supposedly loves, but simply another play in the playbook.
