The Barnacle needs no introduction. He dates Robin on two separate occasions and marries her once. He remains friends with Robin before and after all that. Barney and Robin both had commitment issues which made them both the best and worst people for each other.

Their first attempt at being a couple was undeniably a disaster. It started out passionately and went downhill from there. They had to be locked in a room for the whole day just to define their relationship. They went from strength to strength after that until the fighting started. It never stopped.They were like an old married couple by the time they mutually agreed to break up: fat, unhappy, and trapped in a sexless union.

Their second attempt was a lot more successful. They were genuinely happy and even got married. The quantity of travel required by Robin’s job made married life seriously complicated. They ended up getting a divorce after three years. The marriage wasn’t an exact failure though. As Barney put it, “This isn’t a failed marriage. It’s a very successful marriage that happened to only last 3 years.”
