It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: 10 Most Emotional Moments
4. Mac Comes Out (Hero Or Hate Crime)
One of the show's biggest running gags was the repressed sexuality of Mac. The loveable creator of project badass was so clearly at odds with himself and his sexuality, and it was only a matter of time before the show committed to letting him be gay. But, no one expected it to be like this.
In "Hero or Hate Crime", the gang arbitrate over a scratch lottery ticket that they all feel entitled to. During the argument, it's made clear that Frank's use of a slur could make Mac eligible to claim ownership over the ticket, so Mac claims to be gay to do so. Everyone assumes that he'll go right back in the closet afterwards, but he doesn't.
It wouldn't have been out of character for the show to have him finally come out in a comedic way. In fact, they'd almost done that before, as he came out of the closet in "The Gang Goes To hell" but went right back in. Here, they chose to give the moment a quiet dignity, letting him say it and getting support and admiration from the gang.
The entire moment would have been purely serious and sentimental were it not for the Ass Blaster 4000 hiding in the background. Still, overall, it was a very unexpected and deeply moving moment.
