It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: 10 Most Insane Fan Theories
8. Charlie Kelly = Charlie Gordon
Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction story written by Daniel Keys. It was first published in novel form in 1966 and went on to be highly acclaimed. The narrative shows us a man named Charlie Gordon dictating a series of progress reports after being the first human subject for a surgery that develops intelligence. The show did a parody episode of it in the form of Flowers for Charlie, but this theory takes it a little further.
It details the concept that Charlie Kelly is, in fact, the Charlie Gordon from the book, albeit either suffering from amnesia as a side effect from the experiment or actively choosing to live in ignorance to escape from the tragic backstory that came from the novel.
This is an incredibly unlikely thing, as clearly the showrunners are familiar with the story and don't place any particular ties or clues throughout the show excluding the one episode.
In fact, if it were true then surely Charlie would either have refused to partake in the experiment - as he knew how it would end - or in the case of amnesia, still felt reluctant due to a subconscious objection.
It's a rather nice idea, but very illogical. But that doesn't make it any less fun to speculate.
