Marvel's Daredevil Season 2: 10 Ups And 2 Downs

1. Weird Story Turns

Daredevil ups downs Punisher Elektra
Netflix

As mentioned previously, I thought Elektra was well-portrayed by Elodie Yung, and in terms of the action beats and personality traits the character worked.

However, there were a couple of big moments in the concluding episodes that revolved around her, and they didn't work. One is when they're making their way to the rooftop, ready for a final showdown with the Hand. Knowing they might not survive, Matt gives a heartfelt speech about how he wants to be with her, about the way he makes her feel and how he'll leave his New York life behind to follow wherever she goes.

It felt like a weird moment, and one that hadn't been earned by either character. Matt's city is New York, Elektra even says that, and for him to say he'll leave it and everyone he holds close behind to follow a woman he hasn't loved since college, a woman who is a killer, just doesn't fit. Had they built up to that, with Elektra causing him to question or choose between Matt Murdock and Daredevil it might have worked, but coming in this sudden instance did not.

The other big Elektra moment was the twist, which revealed her to be the Black Sky that the Hand want to unleash. Again, it just felt quite a random and unnecessary moment. Oh, all of a sudden she's the incredible weapon the Hand want to use, and Stick knew this when he raised her, but now he wants to kill her, but actually she's not going to kill him and what?! There was a lack of setup for this moment, and in particular a lack of setup to make us care about the Black Sky in general, that it didn't really work, and ultimately felt pointless - until her eventual resurrection, at least.
