Marvel's The Punisher Season 2: 10 Reasons To Be Excited

5. New Adversary John Pilgrim Presents Intriguing Possibilities

Reportedly The Punisher will also tangle with an 'alt-right Christian fundamentalist' named John Pilgrim this season. This is an interesting notion given the current political climate. Played by Josh Stewart the character doesn't seem to have been taken from Marvel comics, at least not directly. There have been some suggestions he is similar to The Mennonite who appeared in three Punisher issues in 2010, but that's not much to go on.

What is possible, however, is that the description of the character as alt-right and fundamentalist might push some buttons at a time when certain factions on the political right in real life have tried to adopt The Punisher's iconography for themselves - something which Jon Bernthal himself has previously spoken out against. With The Punisher being a man who takes the law into his own hands, uses countless firearms and lethal force it seems possible that the show's creators will use John Pilgrim as a way to clearly delineate the difference between Castle and people who would use the character in a negative way.

Whatever way it works out, it's a hot-button issue to even attempt to tackle and it's good to see the show continuing to address real world issues - as many of the other Marvel/Netflix shows have before. It'll be interesting to see if they can pull it off without being too heavy handed or reducing the entertainment value of the series.
