Marvel's The Punisher Season 2: 10 Reasons To Be Excited
6. Billy Russo Will Finally Become Jigsaw
Season 1 of The Punisher revealed that Frank's ex-marine colleague Billy Russo was working with the people who killed Castle's family. The season ended with The Punisher brutally scarring his former best friend in a pitched battle at the carousel where Frank's family were killed. Castle elected not to kill him, however, wanting Russo to be reminded of his misdeeds every time he looks in a mirror. For such a vain character it seemed a fitting punishment.
Longtime comic book fans will know that Billy Russo is also classic Punisher enemy Jigsaw, and his injuries, and increasingly unhinged actions in season 1, point the way to the villain's appearance in season 2.
“The repercussions of that final fight are definitely marked on his face,” Billy Russo actor Ben Barnes has said. “They carefully tried to figure out a way to have all the specific injuries from that fight represented on Billy’s face. As with all of these stories, they've gone for a more grounded version of what that imagery would be.”
While this means Jigsaw will be a bit different from the comic books, this approach has met with success in recent seasons. While Russo will sport a jigsaw mask in the new season, they've also gone for a more layered approach psychologically after he also suffered extensive brain damage. It'll be interesting to see how this new take on the character works as a foil for Castle as - confused and tormented as he is - he might just be even more dangerous than before.
