How I Met Your Mother: Barney's 10 Most Brilliant Plays

8. Lorenzo von Matterhorn

In the first appearance of the Playbook (S5E8, "The Playbook"), Barney decides to use one of the plays in his triumphant return to the dating world after his break-up with Robin, and that play is The Lorenzo von Matterhorn. The play involves choosing a fake name (in this case, Lorenzo von Matterhorn) and setting up a series of fake websites that describe the exploits of reclusive billionaire, Lorenzo. Including photos of himself under the name Lorenzo. Barney then goes into a bar and approaches an attractive woman and tells her in an exasperated voice, "yeah, it's me." When the woman doesn't recognize him, he acts flattered that for once, someone doesn't recognize him. When he walks away, the woman then looks him up on the Internet and discovers all his exploits. The play worked, but the woman Barney picked up was Lily's co-worker, who she intended to hook up with Ted. It's a clever ploy that not only works on its own, but also plays into another play. Which we'll get to shortly.
