10 Minor Things That PISS Doctor Who Fans Off

Prepare to engage your attack eyebrows at these slight irritations...

It's the little things that infuriate Doctor Who fans the most. Moaning is our golf, as Steven Moffat might say.

When Doctor Who made its triumphant return to screens in 2005, the old joke about stairs thwarting the Daleks' plans to conquer the universe started doing the rounds again. Grrr. That's despite the 1988 serial Remembrance of the Daleks completely rubbishing that notion.

See Exhibit A.

Series 1 then quickly and brilliantly debunked this fakest of facts during the fantastic episode, Dalek, and also showed how terrifying the Daleks truly are.

Anyway, that's just a taste of what's to come.

Within this article you'll find things that almost certainly grind your gears if you've been a fan of the show for any decent length of time, remember forgotten stuff to re-piss you off, and discover surprising things that didn't piss you off in the first place, but sure will do now. We're nice like that.

10. So, What Season/Series Are We On?

How do you take your latest batch of Doctor Who episodes?

Are you old school and call it Season 41? Are you NuWho old school and call it Series 15? Or do you comply with all that nonsensical Disney rebranding and call it Season 2? Honestly, it's enough to make your head turn to mush.

Following the Wilderness Years between 1989 and 2005, it made sense to reset the numbering to Series 1 from 2005 onwards. However RTD and Disney then threw a laser spanner in the works by naming the Fifteenth Doctor's debut run Season 1.

But even then, depending on where you look online and depending on which fans you talk to, you might see it referred to as Series 14. Or Season 40. Or the one with the talking babies in it.

In 2024, RTD told BBC Breakfast ahead of the new series – sorry, season – premiere:

"It's literally new viewers start here. Jump on board and you will follow it from scratch, and all your questions will be answered. It keeps moving on. It's 61 years old, and the marvellous thing is, the past 61 years don't matter. It's here, it's now, it's new, it's fresh and it's for you."

It's a quote that aged about as well as the Tenth Doctor in The Sound of Drums, confirming once and for all that you simply cannot please anyone no matter which way you choose to number your Doctor Who series/seasons.

God only knows how the next production team will tackle this issue. At this rate we'll have to end up calling it Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu Nu NuWho!

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
