The whole fated lovers thing is actually a decent arc to have in a fantasy but the way this couple part ways is less tragic and more just tacked on.
The shock factor was surprisingly low, in part due to the circumstances leading up to the death but also the death scene itself. The two share one last embrace after the shot to the heart and while it is a touching moment it doesn't fit in with the usual realistic coverage of death in Thrones.
The separation of these two was inevitable but it may have made more sense to have her death at Hardhome. It would have been better than introducing the red shirt female Wildling only to kill her.
If that were Ygritte sitting up with cold, dead eyes that scene would have been the perfect crown to a stunning episode.
