This isn't only a pointless death, but the absolute worst way for the character to go out. 

If Khal Drogo was torn apart by wolves or died cutting himself out of the belly of a sea dragon nobody would have batted an eye. Instead he basically perished thanks to the combination of an infected boo-boo and some bad voodoo.

At one point the biggest threat to the crown was mobilising to cross the narrow sea and take the "Iron chair". That he was undone by a scratch is unfathomable.

Martin loves to cite historical accuracy when he inserts certain elements but that argument in support of this death comes across as pretty insufficient. Even ignoring the White Walkers and dragons, the widely accepted fallacies of fiction itself would eliminate this death as a viable option. 

Ultimately Dany learns and gains very little from the experience with Drogo: she eventually loses the majority of his men, replaces him with a lover and then ends up in season 6 back where she started. So what narrative purpose did his death even serve?!
