Netflix Cowboy Bebop: 5 Things We’re Excited For (And 5 We’re Worried About)
2. Will General Audiences 'Get It'?
Cowboy Bebop isn't the kind of thing that general audiences would struggle to follow. With that being said, there is a chance it might not be an easily digestible mainstream project.
While it is a masterpiece, Bebop is also messy, putting a lot of faith in its audience and subverting expectations. That's not the kind of thing that guarantees success with general audiences.
To explain further, a great example of Bebop's irreverent charm would be its lack of concern with plot holes. Let's take the previously mentioned Toys in the Attic episode, for example. The outing ends with a cliffhanger and leaves new viewers wondering what will happen next, but in the coming chapter, everything's back to normal with no explanation.
There's stuff like this to be found all over Bebop, and it's part of the charm. The show gives you the space to figure things out for yourself and plays around gleefully with the idea that it doesn't always make sense.
Netflix has the option of keeping that style and trusting their audience or changing it to something a little more coherent and possibly losing a big part of the show's spirit. But, even if they opt for the former, those unfamiliar with the show might not sense what made it so special in the first place.
