Netflix Witcher Trailer: 10 Details You Totally Missed
7. Renfri & Her Short Story, "The Lesser Evil"
Pick up on that broach across the trailer?
You should have, because it's a MASSIVE deal to both Geralt, and the character of Renfri.
Now, at this juncture if you want to stay spoiler-free, just know that this broach appears in multiple shots, and is important.
If you're sticking around though, we can get into some book spoilers that look to be influencing the show in a direct way.
-- POTENTIAL PLOT SPOILERS --
So, in the short story "The Lesser Evil", Geralt meets the nefarious, kill-happy Renfri, a young girl who seems to be happy torturing and killing, with seemingly no remorse or reason. She's heard questioning why Geralt doesn't just kill as freely as she does in the new trailer, to which Geralt notes it would make him "what they say I am".
Without going beat for beat through what happens, the whole point of Renfri is to reflect Geralt's core mentality and attitude towards monsters: That they are the true evil, that must be put down. In Renfri's case, the exploration of whether her actions are her own or from some sort of curse, is key.
As we can see in the trailer, Geralt goes from meeting Renfri to battling her, to - for whatever reason - taking her broach and attaching it to his sword.
Depending on what the showrunners want Renfri to represent to Geralt, it's clear he's taken it on board.
