Netflix's The Order: 12 Questions That Must Be Answered In Season 2

3. Why Did Edward Expel Lilith?

The Order Questions

Lilith was not only once an Order member, but a rather skilled practitioner at that. She became a medium at the same time as Alyssa, the most gifted student the Order has to offer. It appears to have been shortly after her promotion that she was expelled from the Order and robbed of her memory.

Alyssa never explains why Lilith was kicked out, although she refers to the matter as a "tragedy." When Lilith regains her memory, she reveals little of her experience with the Order aside from the fact that she and Alyssa used to braid each other's hair. The only true revelation regarding Lilith's expulsion occurs when she confronts Edward in the temple, and it's revealed that he was the one to expel her.

Throughout the season, most expulsions are carried out under orders by the Temple Magus. In Lilith's case, the command came from the Grand Magus himself. Whatever Lilith did, it was apparently bad enough to demand involvement by the Gnostic Council in deciding her punishment.

Season 1 only references one other case in which the Gnostic Council played a role in a punitive decision of this particular nature. This was when they removed Renee and her sister from the Order for their extreme practice of necromancy, which is claimed to have nearly started a war.

The reason for Lilith's expulsion was likely not as extreme, but it was severe enough to earn the attention of the Grand Magus. The Order isn't necessarily consistent, with one student expelled for failing to steal a coin while Gabrielle's membership persists after she literally tortured her classmates' souls. Nonetheless, Lilith's violent reaction to regaining her memories was likely rooted in something a bit deeper than the fact that she used to braid Alyssa's hair. Season 2 would do well to explore this more deeply.
