Orange Is The New Black: Top 10 Moments Of Season 3
10. Sophia Goes To The SHU
The specialty of Orange Is The New Black has turned out to be tackling issues about the way women live and are treated in a way that no mainstream media has truly done before, whether it be Season 1s hilarious portrayal of the ladies anatomical confusion or Season 3s subtle discourse on sexual violence (but more on that later). The show goes one step further with the character of Sophia Burset, through which viewers can see and understand the struggles of transgender women in an unprecedented way for a popular TV show. One of the most powerful story arcs in Season 3 was uncovered when many of the women at Litchfield quickly turned against Sophia on the perception of her as an outsider due to her gender identity when once she was accepted and even embraced, at the drop of a hat, she is ostracized and condemned. This comes to a head in the poignant moment when Sophia, covered in injuries when she was attacked for being a man by fellow inmates, is dragged to solitary confinement for her own good. In a way that Orange Is The New Black does best, this particular moment shows not only Sophias unique struggles as a trans woman, as she is ostracized on the perception that she is not one of them, and additionally puts on unapologetic display the many failings of the prison system to deal with the needs, and in this case the safety, of its inmates.
