Could Peter Jackson Really Direct Doctor Who?

Where Would It Be Made?

The question of where such an episode would be made is one without any compromise: while Doctor Who is based at BBC Wales in Cardiff, it seems that Jackson would want any episode he directs to be filmed in his native New Zealand. In addition to filming of course, there would also be the planning that needs to happen before the cameras start rolling, not to mention all the editing and sound work that occurs afterwards. That said however, despite often being as English as can be, the Doctor already has more connections with New Zealand than you would probably realise. Not only have Steven Moffat and Peter Jackson collaborated before on The Adventures Of TinTin (as writer and producer respectively), but scriptwriter Neil Cross (The Rings Of Akhaten, Hide) also now lives there. He is another name keen to see such a project come to fruition, and has thrown his weight behind it by offering to write an episode that could be based, and filmed, entirely in the former British realm. New Zealand was also honoured by a special visit from Paul McGann when he was a guest at the 2010 Armageddon Pop Culture Expo in Auckland. More than just another convention appearance however, it was here that he revealed the Eighth Doctor's latest costume for his newest audio adventures, and his revamped Sonic Screwdriver was designed by none other than Jackson's own Weta Workshop. It might sound like a lot, but travelling around the world is nothing that couldn't be overcome, especially when you consider that Jackson's only other stipulation for him sitting in the director's chair is "one of those nice new gold-coloured Daleks", which have now been replaced on-screen by the new Dalek Paradigm anyway. Although New Zealand is about as far away as you can get without going full circle back towards Cardiff again, the series has never been shy of venturing over seas, and several seasons have already had stints at filming throughout Europe.
