Peter Jackson's cameo as a knife-wielding Santa Claus in Hot Fuzz is about as brief as you can get, and his appearance in last year's The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot wasn't much longer. One thing we can take from these however, is that the fact he even considered these minor appearances confirms that his willing is definitely there. Directing an entire episode of the BBC's flagship science fiction drama would take up rather more time though, so where exactly would Doctor Who fit into his busy schedule. Firstly we have to acknowledge that by the time all the three-hour Hobbit films have gone through the processes of pre-production, production, post-production AND adapted into extended editions, surely even Joss Whedon would take a well deserved break rather than tackle yet another project straight away. Not that this is a bad thing however, as most likely everyone involved in such a collaboration will need time to sync their diaries as far in advance as they can. Taking this into account, even before the extensive planning that New Zealand would require, and next year still seems far too early, but airing on the side of caution, Christmas 2016 does actually look feasible. It may sound like a long time away, but surely an episode of Doctor Who directed by Peter Jackson is something worth waiting for. The Doctor Who production team have always strived to produce quality episodes rather than rush their workload and squeeze out too many episodes in too short a space of time. This would go doubly for any possible collaboration with the Southern Hemisphere's most beloved film-maker, especially one that would require so much meticulous planning. Far from the pipe-dream it may have seemed back when it first dreamt up though, having a director of such high esteem could in fact be the perfect way to celebrate the complete broadcast of the show's tenth revived season.
