3. 'I Could Have Saved Them'
Quite possible the most extremely subtle, yet telling, moment in the season comes during the first conversation between Karen and Frank (which was, bar-none, the most interesting relationship in the show).
Talking to Karen, he alludes that he should have been able to prevent what happened to his wife and children. Some may think that it was simply due to his exhaustion from the war dulling his senses, but the truth is that Frank may have wanted it to happen.
A monster was awoken within Castle while he was bathing in the blood of his enemies in combat. That monster wanted more and may have let what happened happen.
It's been suggested many times in the comics that Frank needed an excuse to keep killing. What better excuse than witnessing his family killed by an enemy whose ranks will never deplete?
Yet another complicated brick in the wall of the man who only sees in black and white.
