Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Series 6

Red Dwarf VIII
BBC

The series arc introduced in series 6 saw the boys having lost Red Dwarf and Holly along with it. Trapped in Starbug, the four main cast members went through monster of the week episodes with some surprising continuity to them.

When Starbug was upgraded with weapons and armour or Rimmer was given a physical form through a hard light bee, those changes stayed with the show through the end of the season and beyond.

The series is a bit of a mixed bag, between those that are good but seem to be leftover ideas from older episodes (Psirens, Emohawk, Rimmerworld) to the great (Legion and Out Of Time), but it's the outstanding Gunmen Of The Apocalypse that brought the show an Emmy, and with good reason.

The BBC, believing the script to be too costly and time-consuming to film, sent a memo to shut down the episode's production. By the time the crew got that memo, they'd wrapped and preproduction had already begun. It's genuinely amazing what they pulled off with the BBC's shoestring budget. While the western town isn't fully realized, it feels it and Gunmen expertly plays off both video game and western film tropes throughout.

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
