Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Series 2
Finding themselves limited with stories solely set on the mining ship, the writers introduced ways to get the boys to different planets, realities and time periods. A stasis leak took them back in time, and the Holly Hop Drive took them to a parallel universe where they met a female Holly of all things.
Then there was the total immersion video game Better Than Life that provides the perfect world for users (which may not be that good for someone like Rimmer who hates himself). Finally, Blue Midget was introduced as a shuttle in this series to allow the boys some more freedom.
The first episode is notable for introducing Kryten (here played by David Ross) to the show, although he'd leave at the end of his episode and only return from series 3 onwards. And the brilliant but underrated Queeg ("We are talking jape of the decade") is always fun.
But it's Thanks For The Memory that really hits it out of the park. Starting with a party, we follow a mystery and see our characters becoming a lot more well-rounded throughout. Oddly moving and just as funny as the others, this is the standout episode of the series.
