Rick & Morty: 10 Essential Episodes EVERY Fan Should See

1. The Ricklantis Mixup

Adult Swim

The only canonical episode in which we don't follow the Rick and Morty we've familiarised ourselves with - or then again maybe we do, who knows at this point.

Proving just how solid the writing in Rick and Morty actually is, how many other series’ can you name that have a masterfully crafted episode without its protagonists present through the run time? Even though they are, sort of.

Upon commencement, it seems like the substandard sort of setup we've come to know, until our leads decide they're taking the week off and in their place we follow the adventures of every rick and Morty trying to recover the citadel after our sociopathic main character obliterated it in the short space of 21 minutes earlier that season.

An unexpected masterpiece that absolutely stands head and shoulders above the rest on its own merits. The Ricklantis Mixup is a masterclass in writing, parodying three of Hollywood’s most classic movies simultaneously. When it isn’t throwing out pop culture references left right and centre, it perpetuates it’s satirically crunching angle on real-life society with no restraints.

In a short space of time, it takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. The jokes are gut busting; the tension is harrowing and the episode culminates in a shockingly brilliant twist no one saw coming.

There aren’t many episodes in the annals of television history that can be considered perfect, but this one makes an egregiously strong case to be.
