Sex Education: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best
4. Eric Effiong
The show has a lot of personality, and a major part of that comes from the brilliant character work surrounding Eric. He is brought compellingly to life by Ncuti Gatwa and delivers on some of the show's best moments.
At first, he seems like the classic best friend to the lead role, he quickly becomes a central protagonist with his own story and importance.
One of the most exciting parts of Eric is this dual personality he gives off that feels akin to the phrase all bark and no bite. While alongside Otis, he is this loud and characterful person who utterly steals the energy of the scene, but when with those outside of his friendship group, he transitions quickly into a regressed and introverted person.
This is fascinating in many ways, the first being that it gives him a sense of depth and the second being that it goes against the traditional presentation of openly gay men in TV/film. Typically LGBT characters who are open are presented as overly confident with themselves and others, but Eric delivers on a far more truthful depiction.
His evolution and consistently hilarious performance help to give him a special place within the show.
