While the central themes tend to revolve around adolescence and youth, Jean steps in to bring a completely different angle and quickly becomes the best part of the show. The legendary Gillian Anderson is on top form here as the mother of the leading character, and she delivers on a role that is equal parts complex and utterly hilarious to watch.

Jean is the catalyst for the majority of the series, as it's her influences on her son that gives him the knowledge he needs to work the therapy business. She sets in motion a majority of the most important parts of the narrative and does it all with this wickedly charming personality.

Jean is incredibly open, yet distant at the same time, and this means that you are often playing a guessing game with her in regards to motives or intentions. She works really hard to make her son happy, but at the same time is willing to be selfish, which makes her incredibly believable and relatable.

Finally, Jean altogether presents a part that we haven't seen before. Her confident and open dynamic crossed with the relationship she has with her son makes the less subtle sexual sequences feel essential and not superfluous.
