She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode Two Review - 7 Ups And 4 Downs

7. Up - Meta-Jokes

There was a big deal made about the fact that Jen would break the fourth wall before the show even released, and even though many (this writer included) weren’t sure how it would pan out in the MCU, it was immediately a home run.

On top of this type of humour, right now completely unique to She-Hulk in terms of the MCU, episode two also took further steps into the realms of meta-humour. Not necessarily fourth wall breaking, though the episode had its fair share, but the MCU poking fun at itself.

This came in two major forms. First was Jen’s rant about not wanting to be a superhero. She wasn’t a superhero because they all seemed to be billionaires, narcissists, or adult orphans “for some reason”. You can count on one hand the amount of MCU heroes that have both parents alive, well, and not a villain – it’s basically just Hope van Dyne and Kamala Khan.

The second was arguably the best, as Hulk explained that his fight with Emil Blonsky was so long ago that he is a different person now. Literally. Cue the fourth wall break from Jen and this was a hilarious moment that has been building for 14 whole years.
