Before his ascension, 'The Reichenbach Fall', and before his dramatic return, Moriarty stunned us all in the climax to 'The Great Game'. It's a fantastic first performance - not counting the cameo as Molly's boyfriend of course - as Jim screams at Sherlock, snarls at him and generally just takes the mickey out of his nemesis; the series ends on the cliffhanger of Jim, Sherlock and John all standing around the pool, guns pointed, explosives between them, but the crisis is averted in the opening moments of Series 2 when Moriarty receives a phone call, before leaving. When the original scene was shot though, the writers didn't know they'd be getting a second series. They were quite happy to end the show there.
