Sherlock: 18 Best Moments (In Gifs)

10. "The Painting Is A Fake"

The show is famed for the high-speed deliveries with which Benedict Cumberbatch explains what's going on in Sherlock's mind, and this scene was perhaps the most brilliant of those monologues. Sherlock, John and Lestrade find the body of a man, and from the ticket stubs in his pocket, coupled with the deduction that he must work in a museum, Sherlock works out that a painting set to be unveiled that night is a fake. It's one of the more amazing deductions that he makes, and given the lengthy explanation of how he got there, it shows an insight into just how sharp his mind is. Of course, it takes a little longer to realise why the painting's a fake, but then some basic knowledge of the solar system never really helped anyone much these days, did it?

9. John Faces The Hound

It's one of the scariest scenes of the series. John is trapped in the lab, being stalked by the Hound of the Baskervilles; we really believe at this point that the dog is after him, and that he's helpless. The camera work further blurs both our vision and John's; it's a dramatic moment, played brilliantly by Martin Freeman. So imagine John's annoyance when he finds out that Sherlock's left him there to conduct a test on what the beast actually is.
