Sherlock Season 4: 20 Easter Eggs & References From The Six Thatchers
15. Giles Lestrade
Sherlock's inability to remember Lestrade's first name has become one of the show's favourite running jokes. Over the seasons, he has called him everything from Graham to Geoff instead of his actual name: Greg. This is a nod to the face that Doyle never gave Lestrade a first name, only assigning him the initial G.
In The Six Thatchers, Sherlock gets it wrong again and calls him Giles. This one is a specific reference to another Holmes adaptation. The long-running BBC Radio 4 series of Sherlock Holmes audio plays gave Lestrade the first name Giles (where he was played by recurring Doctor Who actor Stephen Thorne).
